NJP to Gangtok by Personal Taxi:
You can hire a personal taxi from NJP (New Jalpaiguri) railway station to Gangtok.
Prepaid taxis have fixed rates depending on the size of car. A small car with capacity of four people will cost around INR 2800. The bigger cars with seating capacity of, seven or eight people will cost between INR 3200 to INR 4200. Coaches are also available, which can accommodate over 20 people and that will cost approximately INR 8000. Though government has decided the taxi fares, but during peak seasons, you might be charged higher.
The taxis are available 24X7. From the prepaid taxi stand you will get the taxis with West Bengal registration. They will drop you at Deorali taxi stand, which is two kms away from Gangtok, from where you will have to take another taxi to reach Gangtok. If appropriate, try to find a Sikkim registered cab from outside the station. They will take you to the city centre of Gangtok.
If you are reaching late in evening to NJP, it is advisable to take a halt at NJP and travel early next morning.

NJP to Gangtok by Pooled / Shared Taxi:
shared or pooled taxis or jeeps are readily available from morning till evening, . The shared taxis are not available at night. They have seating capacity of ten people. You can reserve more than one seat as well, if you want to go comfortably. The fare is around INR 250 per seat. It usually takes longer, around five to six hours to reach Gangtok by shared taxi, as there are several halts. The taxi will drop you at Deorali taxi stand, which is 2 kms away from Gangtok. You will have to take local taxi from here to reach your destination. The luggage is kept on the top of the vehicle, which is usually covered during rainy season.
NJP to Gangtok by Bus:
The state government, Sikkim Nationalized Transport, also runs bus service from Siliguri to Gangtok.
After getting down at NJP, either take a tuk tuk which will cost around Rs. 15 or get a personal cab/auto which will cost around Rs. 120 to 150 to reach Siliguri Bus Stand. It is just 3 kilometers away, so should not take more than 15 mins.
There are two operators running the bus on this route: Government SNT buses and private operator Apsara. There are buses almost every hour, starting from 8:00 AM in the morning till 2:30 PM in the afternoon. These are non- AC buses and fare is approximately INR 200.
It takes little over five hours to reach Gangtok by bus from Siliguri.
It is advisable to travel only during day as the road is very steep.
