When you are amidst the Queen of Valleys, the natural instinct and sport would be to climb. While staying in Sikkim,lying in the lap of Himalayas, the most sought sport by locals, professionals and amateurs alike is Mountaineering and there are no doubts around it. Sikkim government have recently opened some to the peaks to promote tourism. Few known routes among the mountaineers are:
From Tingvong to Gangtok which can be done in five days. It is easy and suitable for beginners.
Coronation trek, starting from Pelling (113 kms from Gangtok) is approximately a seven day low altitude trek.
Khangchendzonga trek is more intense and takes around 17 days.
If you are looking for a small one day trek near Gangtok, then try Tinjurey Trek. The Tinjurey Trek Starts from Tashi View Point. It is a 5 km trek and both sides can be done easily in a day .
Special permissions are required and fees needs to be paid to the IMF and State Authorities before going for trekking the peaks. It is advisable to initiate the process six months in advance. The best time to go for trek is from May till October.
Mountaineering Peaks in Gangtok
The best way to go for mountaineering is in group and it is mandatory to include a liaison officer from Sikkim Mountaineering association and IMF each. They are the ones who take care of rescue operations in case of emergencies.
The organizer will give you elaborate list of what is inclusive in the package and what is not. This will help you in carrying only those items which are essential. But some basic things you must have are: a compass, flashlight, knife, insulation jacket, first aid, small power food packs, sunscreen, sunglasses and a lighter or matchbox. Try to keep yourself light.
